Lecture on Government Threats to Privacy
Digital Rights Ireland is inviting to a Lecture on Government Threats to Privacy. It sounds really interesting I think I will go there.
Digital Rights Ireland would like to invite you to join us at a lecture on “Government and Privacy in the Digital Ageâ€, given by Suw Charman, executive director of the Open Rights Group, on Friday 24th February. The lecture will be followed by a response from our very own director, TJ McIntyre.
Suw Charman is a journalist, consultant and author. The Open Rights Group is a new digital civil liberties advocacy group for the UK. Their aims are very similar to ours - to raise awareness of digital rights issues, campaign against harmful legislation, and help other digital rights organisations get their voices heard in the media.
New technology makes it ever easier for governments to monitor you. The Irish government has already introduced laws to record who you telephone, what web pages you read and even the location of your mobile phone at all times. The UK government is proposing to go even further and wants to bring in mandatory ID cards and tracking of the location of every car. Digital Rights Ireland is concerned that draconian laws in the UK will be used as an excuse to bring in similar laws in Ireland, and we have been following the UK situation closely. We look forward to hearing from Suw about UK developments and to working with her to promote privacy rights.
The talk will take place at 6.30pm on Friday 24th February, as part of the Dublin Legal Workshop series. It will take place in the Maxwell Lecture Theatre, on the first floor of the Hamilton Building (map), in Trinity College Dublin, and will be chaired by Dr. Eoin O’Dell, lecturer in law and Fellow of Trinity College Dublin. We hope to see you there!
Neverwinter Nights PC Version on Macintosh
This weekend I tried to get my old Neverwinter Nights PC version with both addons running on my Macintosh as I thought it might work so I don’t have to buy the game again. But I found out its more a money making thing that this doesn’t really work. Well my thoughts were all I need are the binaries to run NWN on my Mac.
That was wrong. Well I did a basic install of NWN on my Windows XP machine. Copied it over to the Mac. Then there is a nice tool called NWNUpdate on sourceforge which is a program that lets you install the Windows Version of the addons on your macintosh and also has an update option. So I copied the windows install over, run the program to install both addons but then stop. Whats the story with the keys it doesnt ask for them. No you have toedit the nwnkey file by yourself and have to add the keys manually. Ok no problem I have a backup of my old key file. Then I run the update option in the NWNUpdate program, after 20minutes of download the patch it told me an error and he couldn’t update. Well I downloaded the Patches manually and then …. TADA … nothing. All I could start was the Dedicated Server and there was not even text in all the boxes, they were just empty but when I tried to start the DM Client or the NWNClient it just crashed. Check the logs … nothing in it. Ok that’s funny because I got the binaries there. So I started looking in the forum about anything simular because there must be somebody out there that has tried that before. But all I found was that you need the NWN Mac Version because there are the binaries on it that are not in the patches (so they must be linked to something) and that it’s because the NWN Mac version is made by MacSoft and that they wouldn’t make any money if you could install NWN with the PC Version and that Bioware doesn’t support any exchange (what I understand because they just made the game and not the CD).
So my final conclusion is I got at least Diablo 2 running ( after installing OS9 Classic) and that I have to buy NWN for Mac. But I won’t because I have the game and I have also gentoo on my laptop and I might try to get it running on that then. But I won’t buy it again. Either I play on my old windows desktop or I try to get it work with gentoo.
Ong-Bak Movie
A while ago I got the tip of Cosmo to watch the Movie Ong-Bak. Yesterday I went dvd shopping and I found this movie in the special ofters. All I can really say is (because I am still impressed and just speechless) WATCH IT and BUY IT.
It’s just fantastic and I really enjoyed movies from Jacki Chan and Jet Li too but I think Tony Jaa is a mixture of both and also a bit of Bruce Lee. The mixture is perfect and he really does a great Job and I believe after I have seen the making of and “Ong-Bak on Tour” that he can fight and he know what he is doing. It really looks good and not to much overtaken by special effects with computers (if there is any of them in it). The worked with lots of dummies and you see it sometimes but the action is perfect the budget 10times smaller then on a hollywood movie and I think the American’s couldn’t have it done better, trust me. The Thai’s did a great job. Here are some posts from other pages.
Plot from IMDB:
When the head of a statue sacred to a village is stolen, a young martial artist goes to the big city and finds himself taking on the underworld to retrieve it.
IMDB Comment:
This movie is incredible. When head of Ong Bak is stolen, Ting (Tony Ja) swear to bring it back from the thugs. When he enters the city he is forced to use Thai Fist, he learned from old priest to combat Thailand’s underworld in arena of illegal underground fighting. The fighting is great, a combination of Muay Thai and Taekwondo kicks this flick is a must for martial art fans. Anyone who is a big fan of Hwang Jang Lee…will be surprised to watch Tony Ja ( Hwang Jang Lee of the 21’st century). WATCH IT and believe me your gonna love it.
eJabberd experience
I wanna write down for everybody how my experience with ejabberd 1.0.0 went on on a Gentoo and FreeBSD 6.0 Server. I will also write this all down as a Tutorial “Howto Setup eJabberd on freebsd with AIM,Yahoo, MSN,ICQ,IRC and email transport.
At the moment the stage is like that, that I have ejabber perfectly running if you want to try it out create an account on jabber.marvinnet.org with the Jabber Web Client. I am working on the mod_irc at the moment as it seems there is some problems with some servers. I can connect to some IRC Server via irc.jabber.marvinnet.org Transport but to some not and I dont know why. Astro is just writting a programm called RbIRC-t what is a Jabber IRC Transport written in Ruby. this might help me out. The MSN Transport is working fine at the moment too. I might integrate the ICQ Transport today as well. If I get this all up and running I will finish working on the howto for ejabberd. But at the moment I am really happy to be in the world of safe and simple chatting.
